Using compressed air in the electronics industry is common place. With the cost, and challenges of manufacturing in Ontario increasing, Electronics manufacturers are now intently focused on energy and carbon footprint reduction, during their manufacturing processes. The potential to drive down the cost of compressing air in this space is relatively simple, and requires minimalistic investment to pick low hanging fruits.

In appropriate compressed air use, and superficial demand are rife in many of the facilities we visit on an introductory discovery call. Some common examples include; generating compressed air at higher pressure than necessary, and then regulating it down, by tens of psig, at the point of use. We know for a fact that a 10psig generating over pressure increases the compressed air Hydro bill by 5%. Desiccant air dryers are also the “norm” in high end electronic, and semi conductor manufacturing facilities, consuming as much as 15% purge air energy. Smart control dewpoint sensors can reduce the purge loss, and today we have alternative types of desiccant air dryers, with purge losses as low as 1%, of the dryers throughput capacity.

Using compressed air at approximately 100 psig to propell and transport parts, caps and components is synonymous in the electronics space, however the pressure is dramatically reduced at the point of use and machinery to pressures as low as 20psig. Blowers, and Nozzles, are a great alternative solution in applications such as these.

Compressed air is an important ingredient in the manufacturing of electrical and electronic devices. The low impact nature and high energy conversion efficiency of compressed air makes it an ideal option for a wide range of industrial purposes. One of the primary uses of compressed air in electronics is printed circuit board cleaning. Compressed air provides a non-obstructive, low impact, and non-abrasive way of removing unwanted debris from these sensitive electronic components after production.

Compressed air is also used to operate equipment. The use of robotic machines, referred to as “pick-and-place machines”, are used for high-speed, precise placement of various electrical components including capacitors, resistors, and integrated circuits on printed circuit boards. Pick-and-place machines are also used in manufacturing industries to transport items from one process to another. Controlled amounts of compressed air are delivered to specific parts of the robot via a tubing system and efficiently converted into mechanical energy. Pneumatic systems are seen as a viable replacement for servo, electric, and hydraulic powered systems in many applications.

Compressed air purity

Because oil can cause damage to end products and sensitive equipment it’s important that the compressed air you’re using is of high quality and high purity. To prevent as much contamination as possible it’s recommended to install a filtration system capable of meeting, or exceeding ISO 8573.1 compressed air quality class. Air Solutions Canada Inc., in conjunction with ultrafilter and Kaeser, have all of the tools, engineering and. Products to design, supply and build a best in class clean air treatment system for you and your business.

27 years of experience means that our team, preventative maintenance plans and best practices allow you to maintain your equipment and ensure it’s working efficiently. Some might say that it is impossible to associate the price of compressed air downtime with the cost of maintaining the equipment correctly. Our service division provides peace of mind for any facet of your compressed air generating station and its distribution network and accessories.
